How do I Create a Behavior Intervention Plan?
Creating a behavior intervention plan (BIP) is a systematic process rooted in Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) principles. At Little Achievers ABA, the process involves the following essential steps:
- Conduct a Functional Behavior Assessment (FBA): This is the mandatory first step. A Board Certified Behavior Analyst (BCBA) identifies the triggers and underlying functions of a behavior, such as seeking attention, escaping demands, or sensory stimulation. Professionals use tools like ABC (Antecedent-Behavior-Consequence) charts and direct observations to gather data.
- Formulate Hypotheses: Based on the FBA data, a hypothesis is created to predict why the behavior occurs. For example, a child might exhibit a tantrum specifically to avoid a difficult task.
- Develop Strategies: The plan incorporates three main types of strategies:
- Proactive Antecedent Strategies: Modifying the environment to prevent triggers, such as using visual schedules.
- Replacement Behaviors: Teaching the child functional alternatives to the challenging behavior, such as requesting a break instead of eloping.
- Consequence Strategies: Using positive reinforcement to encourage desired actions.
- Implement and Monitor: The plan is put into action across settings like home or school. BCBAs conduct biweekly data reviews to track progress and refine the strategies as needed to ensure long-term independence.
