How do Rbts Implement Discrete Trial Training?
At Little Achievers ABA, therapists and Registered Behavior Technicians (RBTs) implement Discrete Trial Training (DTT) by breaking down the learning process into small, manageable units. Controlled by a five-phase structure, the process follows these steps:
- Discriminative Stimulus: The therapist presents a clear instruction or stimulus, such as asking a child to name a picture.
- Prompting: If the child needs assistance, the therapist provides a hint or cue, such as a verbal or physical guide, to help them arrive at the correct response.
- Response: The child performs the behavior or task requested.
- Consequence: Immediate feedback is provided. Correct responses are rewarded with positive reinforcement like praise, tokens, or preferred items. If the response is incorrect, the therapist provides gentle correction or models the right answer.
- Inter-trial Interval: A brief pause of 5 to 10 seconds is taken between trials to reset the child’s focus.
To ensure long-term independence, therapists use systematic prompt fading to gradually reduce assistance. They also monitor progress through data collection, such as tracking response accuracy over multiple sessions, often using initial results from a functional behavior assessment to tailor the difficulty and types of reinforcement used.
