How does Net Therapy Help a Child Generalize Skills at Home and School?
Natural Environment Training (NET) helps children generalize skills by embedding learning directly into the real-world settings where those skills are actually needed. Unlike structured classroom drills, NET utilizes a child’s natural interests and daily routines at home and school to ensure behaviors carry over across different environments.
NET facilitates generalization through several key strategies:
- Incidental Teaching: Therapists and caregivers watch for spontaneous initiations—such as a child reaching for a favorite snack—and use that moment to prompt a specific word or gesture. Because the learning happens in context, the child learns to use the skill naturally rather than just during a therapy session.
- Natural Consequences: By allowing children to experience the direct outcomes of their actions (e.g., feeling cold after refusing a coat), they learn cause and effect in real time. This builds independence and reduces dependence on therapist prompts.
- Environmental Arrangement: Families are taught to place preferred items within sight but out of reach. This creates “communicative temptations” that encourage the child to practice requesting and labeling in various rooms and situations.
- Parent Training and Collaboration: Through biweekly training, caregivers learn to recognize “teachable moments” during dressing, bath time, or grocery trips. Additionally, BCBAs collaborate with teachers to embed goals into classroom activities, ensuring consistent practice across both home and school settings.
