How Often should Positive Reinforcement be Used During Home Therapy?
The frequency of positive reinforcement depends entirely on the stage of the skill being learned. At the beginning of a new task, we utilize a schedule of immediate and constant reinforcement to help your child make a clear connection between their action and the reward. As your child becomes more proficient, we transition into a process called fading.
Here is how we structure the frequency of reinforcement throughout the learning process:
- New Skill Acquisition: During the early stages, we deliver reinforcement every single time the target behavior occurs. This frequent delivery, ideally within one second, builds the necessary momentum and understanding.
- Thinning the Schedule: Once a behavior is securely established, we gradually increase the number of correct responses required or lengthen the time interval before a reward is given. This prevents dependence on constant rewards and prepares your child for natural settings, such as school.
- Pairing Social Praise: We recommend pairing social praise with every tangible reward for several weeks. Over time, the praise itself will become a powerful enough reinforcer to maintain the behavior on its own.
Our BCBA-led teams guide families through these adjustments during biweekly ABA parent training sessions. We track data daily to identify signs of satiation or ratio strain, ensuring the frequency is always personalized to your child’s needs. The goal is always progress—and play can be the perfect path to get there.
Results may vary and individual outcomes are not guaranteed. Consult your licensed BCBA or healthcare professional for individualized assessment and recommendations.
