What are some Examples of Functional Behavior Assessments (fba) in Schools?
In school settings, a Functional Behavior Assessment (FBA) is used to identify why a student demonstrates challenging behaviors that may impede their learning. A Board Certified Behavior Analyst (BCBA) or school team collects data through direct observation (such as ABC recording) and interviews with teachers to categorize behaviors into four primary functions:
- Escape/Avoidance: A student hits or acts out specifically to avoid completing a difficult worksheet or non-preferred academic task.
- Attention: A student yells or disrupts the class to gain a reaction or engagement from the teacher or peers.
- Access to Tangibles: A student may have a tantrum to obtain a favorite toy or a specific classroom resource.
- Sensory Stimulation: A student rocks back and forth or engages in repetitive motions to provide internal sensory feedback or self-soothing.
Once the function is identified, the results are used to create a Behavior Intervention Plan (BIP). In schools, this plan is often integrated into the student’s Individualized Education Program (IEP) to ensure that teachers and paraprofessionals use consistent strategies—such as providing visual schedules or sensory breaks—to teach the student positive replacement skills.
