What are the Steps in the Functional Behavior Assessment (fba) Process?
The Functional Behavior Assessment (FBA) is a systematic, data-driven process used to identify the root causes of challenging behaviors. At Little Achievers ABA, the FBA process typically follows these three steps:
- Data Collection Through Observation and Interviews:
The Board Certified Behavior Analyst (BCBA) gathers information manually and indirectly. This includes interviewing parents, caregivers, and teachers, as well as conducting direct observations in natural settings like home or school. During these observations, they use ABC recording to document Antecedents (what happens before), Behaviors, and Consequences.
- Identifying the Four Functions of Behavior:
The BCBA analyzes the collected data to determine which of the four primary functions is driving the behavior: Escape/Avoidance, Attention, Access to Tangibles, or Sensory Stimulation.
- Conducting a Functional Analysis (FA):
If the initial results are inconclusive, the BCBA may perform a more controlled assessment. This involves systematically testing each hypothesized function by manipulating environmental variables to confirm exactly what reinforces the behavior.
Once the FBA is complete, the findings are used to create a personalized Behavior Intervention Plan (BIP) tailored to the child’s unique strengths and needs.
