What is a Bcba Degree?
A Board Certified Behavior Analyst (BCBA) is a graduate-level professional who holds a nationally recognized certification in behavior analysis. These individuals are the clinical leaders in applied behavior analysis (ABA) therapy, responsible for designing and overseeing personalized treatment programs for individuals with autism.
To earn a BCBA credential, a professional must meet the following requirements set by the Behavior Analyst Certification Board (BACB):
- Education: Completion of a master’s degree or higher in behavior analysis, education, psychology, or a closely related field. This must include a Verified Course Sequence (VCS) consisting of at least 270 hours of graduate-level behavior analysis content.
- Supervised Fieldwork: Completion of either 1,500 hours of standard supervised fieldwork or 1,000 hours of concentrated supervised fieldwork.
- Examination: Passing a rigorous, four-hour national board examination administered by the BACB.
In a clinical setting, the BCBA conducts functional behavior assessments (FBAs), develops Behavior Intervention Plans (BIPs), and provides ongoing supervision to Registered Behavior Technicians (RBTs) who implement the daily one-on-one sessions. They also provide essential training to parents and caregivers to ensure skills are reinforced outside of therapy sessions.
