What is Positive Reinforcement in Aba Therapy?
Positive reinforcement is a foundational principle of Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) that involves adding a valued or enjoyable stimulus immediately after a desired behavior occurs. By pairing a specific action with a rewarding outcome, we increase the likelihood that the child will repeat that positive behavior in the future.
In our practice, we use this evidence-based strategy to help children build essential communication, social, and daily living skills. Because every child is unique, we personalize reinforcers through thorough ABA assessments to identify what truly motivates them. Examples of reinforcers include:
- Social rewards: Verbal praise, high-fives, or smiles.
- Tangible rewards: Stickers, favorite toys, or small treats.
- Activity rewards: Extra minutes of playtime or a preferred sensory activity.
- Token Economies: A system where children earn tokens for specific behaviors and later exchange them for a larger reward.
We build momentum and confidence by systematically applying these rewards during structured sessions, such as Discrete Trial Training (DTT), and within natural play-based environments. Our goal is to eventually fade these external rewards as the skills become intrinsically rewarding for the child.
Results may vary and individual outcomes are not guaranteed. Consult your licensed BCBA or healthcare professional for individualized assessment and recommendations. Insurance coverage varies by plan—verify benefits with your insurer before starting services.
