What is the Difference between Reinforcement and Bribery in Aba?
In our clinical practice, distinguishing between reinforcement and bribery is essential for effective skill-building. While both involve a reward, they function very differently in a child’s learning process:
- Reinforcement is a proactive strategy. It occurs when we add a rewarding stimulus immediately after a desired behavior has been completed. This increases the likelihood that the behavior will happen again in the future. For example, if a child uses their words to request a snack and then receives that snack, we have reinforced functional communication.
- Bribery is typically a reactive response. It occurs when a reward is offered during a challenging behavior (like a tantrum) to get the child to stop. This often unintentionally rewards the negative behavior, teaching the child that challenging actions lead to preferred items.
At Little Achievers ABA, we emphasize the importance of timing and consistency through our biweekly parent training. We teach you how to deliver rewards within one second of a target behavior to strengthen the correct connection. By focusing on positive reinforcement, we ensure that we are building lasting skills rather than just providing a temporary fix for a difficult moment.
The goal is always progress—and play can be the perfect path to get there. We use personalized preference assessments to ensure that reinforcement remains motivating and effective for your child.
