What Role does a Registered Behavior Technician Play in Functional Assessments?
Registered Behavior Technicians (RBTs) play a supportive and observational role in functional behavior assessments (FBAs) under the direction of a Board Certified Behavior Analyst (BCBA). While RBTs do not conduct the assessments independently, they are essential in gathering the empirical evidence needed to identify why challenging behaviors occur.
In this role, RBTs perform the following tasks:
- Direct Observation: They watch for antecedents, behaviors, and consequences (ABC recording) during routines or play to help identify behavioral patterns and triggers.
- Data Collection: RBTs use specific techniques such as frequency counting and scatterplot recording to map problem behaviors over time and reveal triggers like transitions.
- Facilitation: They help facilitate and record responses during structured interviews with caregivers to provide necessary context for the assessment.
- Implementation: Once triggers are identified, RBTs assist in implementing the targeted interventions and strategies developed by the BCBA to address the identified functions of the behavior, such as attention-seeking or sensory needs.
